The closure will enable members to reorganize their members into groups to trade after failure to observe social distancing rules

The Kumasi Central Market has been closed down after sellers failed to abide by the social distancing directives according to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

In a statement released and signed by the KMA Mayor and Chairman of Kumasi Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC), Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, on Monday, April 6, 2020, the Central Market will be closed down to enable the leadership of the various sellers to reorganize their members into groups to trade in turns to reduce congestion in order to observe the social distancing measures aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.

“Reports reaching the METSEC in the early hours of Monday 6 th April 2020, indicated that traders of the Kumasi Central Market are blatantly disregarding the World Health Organization’s (WHO) social distancing protocol in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The scary nature of the report warranted an emergency METSEC meeting with the Eleven Member Committee of the Kumasi Central Market as well as other leaders of the 67 trade associations of the market," the statement said.

Ghana as at Tuesday had recorded 287 COVID-19 cases and effort to avoid the spread of the virus in harmony with government’s directives are in place to prevent further increase hence the modalities for the rotation of the various groups.

According to reports, further lock down is yet to be schedule if citizens continue to flout on the social distancing directives which obstructs and threatens lives.
