First batch of Nigerians from Sudan arrive home

After spending days stuck at the Egyptian border due to visa complications, the first batch of 376 Nigerians escaping the situation in Sudan landed in Abuja on Wednesday.

The evacuees were transported by air in two airplanes, one from the neighboring Egyptian city of Aswan and the other from the Nigerian airline Air Peace.

The foreign ministry and emergency services welcomed the obviously delighted returnees.

The minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management, Sadiya Farouk, announced that each returnee would get $200 (£196) to help them reestablish themselves at home.

To transport the refugees to Egypt for airlifting to the West African nation, Nigeria has sent out 40 opulent coaches.

At least 550 people have died, tens of thousands have been displaced, and hundreds of foreigners and international workers have fled the conflict in Sudan.
