Final Year Student Dies at Methodist Girls’ SHS

A final year student of Methodist Girls' Senior High School at Manfe in the Eastern Region has passed away.

The deceased, Ms. Cindy Aku Sika Addo of General Arts 4A, is reported to have died at the Koforidua Government hospital on Friday, July 17, 2020.

Per a statement issued by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on Sunday, July 19, 2020, management of the school quickly rushed Ms. Addo to the Tetteh Quarshie Hospital at Mampong around 11 p.m  on Thursday, July 16, 2020, when her friends detected that she was not well.

The statement said the deceased’s parents were immediately informed and they went to the hospital to see her, adding that Ms. Addo was later referred to the Koforidua Regional hospital where was diagnosed with acute malaria.

According to the GES, Ms Addo died a day after she was transferred to the Koforidua government hospital.

The sad incident comes barely two weeks after a final year student of KNUST Senior High School, Richard Sam, also died. 

Another final year student of Gwiraman Senior High School - identified as Nathaniel Yankey - also passed away last week.

The deceased, Nathaniel, is said to have complained of headaches and later died at the hospital. 

Meanwhile, calls for closure of schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic has gained steam, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) blaming the government for the spike in cases.

The National Parent Teacher Associations have also called on the Akufo-Addo government to close schools and test all students for the virus.

The government has however maintained that calls for closure of schools are still premature.
