Fifteen African states abstain in UN vote against Russia

A resolution denouncing Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago was overwhelmingly endorsed by the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, with 28 voting in favor and 15 African nations abstaining.

The resolution demanded that the fighting stop and that all forces leave Ukraine. Despite not having legal force, the legislation has political influence.

141 countries supported it, with 32 abstention and 7 voting against. Africa accounted for almost half of the abstentions.

The following countries did not participate in the vote: South Africa, Ethiopia, Algeria, Angola, Burundi, Namibia, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, Guinea, Mozambique, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

The only African nations to vote no were Eritrea and Mali.

The election was boycotted by Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, and Guinea-Bissau.

Among the African nations that supported the decision were Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, and the Ivory Coast.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, praised the resolution as a potent indication of international support.

On Friday, one year will have passed since the assault at its height.
