Due to the ongoing anti-government protests in the area, the authorities in two cities in Ethiopia's Amhara region have imposed nighttime curfews.

Dessie and Debrebirhan cities imposed the limits after another city, the illustrious Gondar. Monday saw large-scale rallies in both cities.

It was already forbidden to hold protests without permission and for citizens to carry guns.

Last week, after the federal government decided to dismantle the Amhara Special Forces, a paramilitary group, protests started and spread swiftly. (ASF).

However, the move's detractors in Amhara claim that it will leave the area open to attacks from its neighbors.

Tens of thousands of displaced individuals who have sought refuge in the city of Debrebirhan after fleeing unrest in the nearby Oromia region have also been forbidden from leaving their camps.

Debrebirhan is located 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of the capital, Addis Abeba.
