Mali defeats a coup attempt sponsored by the West - Junta

Mali's military junta claims to have foiled a coup attempt last week by "Western-backed" soldiers.

The junta declared in a statement that the alleged thwarted attempt took place between May 11 and 12, without offering evidence.

"The attempt was prevented thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of the defense and security forces," the statement read on state television on Monday.

It did not reveal the identities or whereabouts of the alleged coup plotters but said they will be brought to justice.

A military source told the AFP news agency that roughly ten arrests were made.

Mali's military has taken power twice since ousting elected President Ibrahim Boubacar Keta in August 2020 and has been under pressure to restore democracy.
