Escaped Ethiopia prisoners immobilise guards with chilli

According to authorities, two high-profile inmates who were being escorted back to jail in the south-western Ethiopian town of Alaba sprayed chili powder in the eyes of the guards, causing them to flee.

They were two of the four people that attempted to flee.

"Of the four detainees who fled, one was dead, another was hurt, and two are still at large," Southern Nations regional state police deputy commander Taju Negash told the BBC.

It is unknown from whence the prisoners obtained the chili.

The deceased prisoner was facing a different accusation for allegedly hurling a grenade at police officers while incarcerated.

The chilli powder attack, according to the police, did not damage any of its members.

Ethiopian food includes red pepper, and Alaba is renowned for cultivating it.
