The kidnapping of 80 persons that occurred in northern Nigeria last week has been denounced by the West African organization Ecowas.

Women and teenagers who had been gathering firewood were among the majority of those kidnapped in Zamfara state.

Armed criminal groups have committed numerous kidnappings in Zamfara, frequently for ransom. The incident is the most recent in Nigeria's string of violent crimes.

Over 70 people were slain by armed gangs in two separate attacks last week in the central state of Benue.

Additionally, a week ago, several locals in the isolated were shot in the remote village of Umogidi. Some were decapitated.
