ECOWAS, AU and UNOWAS cautions Ghana not to upset democracy

The Economic Community of the West African State (ECOWAS), African Union (AU) and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) have advised Ghanaians “to refrain from acts that will undermine the successful conclusion of the electoral process.”

They have also commended the West African country for peaceful conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections and urged stakeholders to remain calm ahead of the Electoral Commission’s declaration.

Ghana has witnessed one of the express and peaceful electoral proceedings in the history of democratic governance but stuck with Election declaration.

The NDC have urged supporters to celebrate their ‘supposed’ victory after candidate Mahama’s assertions of being victorious in the elections.

According to the ECOWAS, AU and UNOWAS in a press statement, the two main political parties in Ghana, should preserve the ‘peace in line with their commitments including the signing of the Peace Pact on 4 December 2020,’ and urged political parties involved in the elections to respect the spirit and letter of the commitments.

“We also call on state institutions to continue to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism and transparency.

“We reaffirm our solidarity with the people of the Republic of Ghana in their quest to consolidate their democracy.”
