“Do not decide your Children’s Careers”– Proprietor to parents

Mr.  Manu Benjamin,  proprietor for Star of Hope Montessori Academy, a tutor at Berekum SHS, and a businessman has charged parents to desist from determining the career path their children should choose.

He said, “it is a bit more complicated when it comes to decisions on what is best for children’s education as parents end up choosing a wrong career path for their wards”.
A situation he describes as worrisome as it has ended most children on the wrong path.

According to him, most children do not discover their true identity and interest for their future careers due to the challenges in the education system in the country.

Speaking to the media in Tain, the proprietor stated that a lot of students nowadays do not have any satisfactory answer when they are asked why they chose a particular course or subject at the university.
He said, “most of them will probably answer based on what their parents tell them to learn and this situation is a concern that people need to put their thought into”.

He bemoaned that the children should not hide behind their parent's shadow and just blindly follow what their parents think they should do.

''It is vital for parents not to make the final decision for their children’s field of studies due to the generation gap, dissimilar passion and also higher probability of inaccurate judgment, First of all, parents cannot make a decision for their children’s major in higher institutions for their career because of the generation gap between them. In our modern era, it can easily be observed that our younger generation is more advance in terms of science and technology compared to the older generation. On account of these new science and technology discoveries, a lot of higher institutions have been added which also correspond to the number of new job opportunities'', Hon. Afful stated.

''Besides, parents and their children also live in a different environment. We need to be deliberate on career discussions. Hence, if parents are focusing on the majors that are suitable for their generation, it will not fulfill the needs of the children'', he stressed.

Mr. Afful added that “since parents have more experience in life, they can make better decisions”. However,  he is of the view that this statement is arguable,  arguing that, because their experiences are personal and every person has a different way of learning. Although the parents might have bad experiences in learning a particular subject, it does not mean that their children will go through the same thing.

''Not every situation will be handled in the same way by every person. To conclude, parents cannot make decisions for their children’s field of study because of the generation gap that exists between them. Moreover, in most cases, parents also do not have the same opinion as to their children. Parents tend to make decisions based on their dream and ambition instead of focusing on the children’s priority'', he accounted.

On this note, the proprietor eyed on the government to enact policies that will boost the student's career on what they are cable of doing, especially, to practice a hands-on education. Given this, the country can able to develop internally.
