Death as building collapses in Nigeria’s Kano city

In the northern Nigerian city of Kano, where a three-story structure collapsed in a market and trapped several people, rescue efforts have come to an end.

According to emergency personnel, seven people were injured and transported to a hospital for treatment, most of them with "minor" wounds, while at least one person was found dead under the rubble.

One of the injured, according to Nigeria's National Emergency Agency (Nema), has many fractures and is currently in the hospital.

"We have completed our search of the debris. We think there are no longer any trapped people. Therefore, the rescue effort is over," a company representative told the BBC.

The structure, which housed numerous shops, was still under construction. Its cause for coming down on Tuesday night was not immediately apparent.

Building collapses are common in Nigerian cities and are mostly blamed on disregard for building regulations and a lack of safety measures. They often cause deaths.
