Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Mr Ofosu Asamoah, in a Citi News interview has revealed that, the National Labour Commission will have a meeting with the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) over a strike action declared on Thursday.

The teachers were asked by their leadership to quit class following a delay in the payment of their legacy arrears.

He spoke that today’s meeting will determine the way forward.

“The teachers have stated their position that they are entitled to some arrears which have not been paid them. They have been promised over the period but it has not been delivered that is why they are resorting to the strike."

"So as a commission, we are established to resolve issues on the labour front. We have invited them together with their employees in an attempt to settle whatever is wrong with them so that they can go back to their work. Whatever is due them will be paid to them as well.”

Although some teachers headed the call to lay down their tools yet others went ahead and resisted the call of their leadership and reported to school to work.

According to the Unions, among other things said, they were concerned with the payment of the arrears because their checks had revealed payment by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Internal Audit Unit about three weeks earlier.

“However, we were informed that when the verified data were handed over to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for review and action, the GES would not budge because it claimed some discrepancies had been discovered with some of the payments already effected,” the President of GNAT, Mrs Phillipa Larsen, who spoke on behalf of the unions, said at the press conference to announce the strike.

The Ministry of Education says the government has saved about GH¢11 million from reviewing the data of teachers expecting to be paid their salary arrears by the State.
