Court remands mason who flipped open 6-months old pregnant woman

A-6-month-old pregnant woman is battling for survival at the Tema General Hospital after being stabbed by a-39-year-old mason.

In a case of the Republic versus Stephen Nartey pending at the Ashaiman Circuit Court, Stephen Nartey, 39 years old is facing a charge of causing harm contrary to section 69 of the Criminal Offenses Act 1960(Act 29) for intentionally and unlawfully causing harm to Charity Osoom Mameley by stabbing her abdomen, right hand and right breast with a knife.

The court, presided over by His Honour Mr. Simon Nketiah Gaga turned down his bail plea thereby remanding him into police custody while the case has been adjourned to April 11, 2024 for mention.

Prosecution:Chief Inspector C. O. Norgbedzi presenting the number 54459 D/L/CPL. Okyere Akwasi I/C told the court that on 21/3/2024 at about 5:00 pm, the Ashaiman Divisional Command responded to a distress call from the complainant who happened to be the victim. 

Police upon notification proceeded to the scene and with the assistance of good Samaritans rushed the victim to the Pleasant Medical Center for treatment.

The victim, according to the Prosecutor was later referred to the Tema General Hospital for treatment in ensuring that her condition to be stabilized.

Investigations conducted by the police established that the complainant who was a-6 month pregnant woman stays with the accused person as fiancée at Talaku, Ashaiman but later moved on the 18/03/2024 to stay with her grandmother at Ashaiman Newton due to the abusive conduct of the accused person.

Chief Inspector C. O. Norgbedzi advanced that on 21/ 3/2024, the complainant who closed from work heading home met the accused person at the Middle East, Ashaiman near Pleasant Medical Center near a big gutter and was stabbed twice on the right breast, and right hand, and abdomen with a knife by the accused person amidst misunderstanding.

The complainant sustained deep cut on the abdomen, making her bleed severely. Chief Inspector Norgbedzi told the court that the accused person upon experiencing danger looming decided to run away but the victim raised an alarm causing his arrest by the assistance of others.

He further disclosed to the court that police visited the scene where the knife used to stab the victim was retrieved.
