Bishops' outcry prompts same-sex marriage U-turn

A resolution by the Archbishop of Canterbury requesting opposition to same-sex marriage from Anglican bishops worldwide has been withdrawn.

Justin Welby was responding to harsh criticism of the motion from several progressive bishops who called it out-of-date.

They are among the 650 bishops present at the first Lambeth Conference in 14 years, which is being held in Canterbury.

Socially orthodox Church officials from Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda boycotted the summit in southern England over the issue of gay marriage because homosexuality is a profoundly controversial topic among Anglicans.
