Memphis Depay has opened on what led to the collapse of his move to Barcelona.

The Dutchman was nearing a move to the Camp Nou to reunite with his former Netherlands manager, Ronald Koeman after agreeing on personal terms but the transfer failed to materialize at the end of the transfer window on Monday, October 5, 2020.

Per the account of the Lyon forward, ‘certain’ rules obstructed the move. Lyon’s €25million asking price was willing to be paid by the Blaugranas for the forward who scored 15 goals in 22 appearances as Lyon reached the Champions League semi-finals last season.

The 26-year-old’s contract with the French club expires next summer and according to him, keeping his form intact is important to store the interest alive of Barcelona.

“It was pretty close,” he told NOS.

“We don't need to go into all the details, but there were certain rules that prevented it, unfortunately.

“But I believe everything happens for a reason. I now focus on Lyon and want to be important there again.

“We'll see how things are going again afterwards. If I do my thing, the interest may still be there. I just have to switch that switch now.”

He was expected to seal his move to Barcelona Ousmane Dembele’s wage was off the Blaugrana bill had his loan move to Manchester United become successful.
