Barcelona have sacked sporting director, Eric Abidal.

The news was revealed just a day after the dismissal of Quique Setien as the head coach of the Blaugranas.

The club confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon following the major shakeup in the team.

"Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties," the club said in an official statement.

"The club would publicly like to thank Eric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the Blaugrana family."

Ramon Planes, who held the position of the sporting director role will continue his job as the future plans of Barcelona are yet to be known.

The sack follows Messi’s unhappiness in the club and a bid to convince the Argentine to extend his stay with the Spanish club means whatever is a distraction to his playing days must be cut short.

The 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals on Friday night has brought a major overhaul in every department of the club, with the playing body yet to undergo a massive change.
