Anyaa-Sowutuom MP Commiserates With Flood Victims

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Honourable Emmanuel Tobbin has made his second visit to flood victims on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, to sympathize with them and assess the extent of property damage caused by the recent floods.

The area visited was the Kwashiebu Electoral Area within the constituency, where the MP observed affected residents clearing and packing up the debris from the floodwaters."

The visit follows torrential rainfall on Monday, June 29, 2026, which wreaked havoc and displaced thousands of residents in communities such as Santa Maria, Sowutuom, and Awoshie.

Hon Tobbico provided psychological support to the affected residents, assuring them they would not be left to their fate, pledging humanitarian support to help them return to their normal lives.

He recalled that on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, he was accompanied by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as they toured the hardest-hit areas to assess the situation and console affected residents."

The dumping of household garbage into gutters and open spaces clogs drainage systems, causing stormwater to overflow into communities. 

He estimates human activities account for nearly 50% of Accra's flooding.

Some road culverts and drains are constructed too small to contain large volumes of floodwaters

Many buildings and illegal structures have been erected directly on waterways and flood retention basins.

Proposed Solutions and the Way Forward Enforcing Sanitation By-Laws

Hon. Tobbin urged the Ga Central Municipal Assembly to strictly enforce sanitation regulations and prosecute offenders to serve as a deterrent.

He called on road and building engineers to carefully plan and design larger gutters and drains to prevent future disasters.

He emphasized that the government must demonstrate the political will to demolish illegal structures on waterways, regardless of the owners' status in society.

He assured affected residents that they will receive relief items and reiterated his commitment to not abandoning them to their fate.
