Over two and half hour heavy downpour on Monday afternoon, between the hours of 2 pm and 5 pm has resulted in another flooding in many parts of Koforidua the Eastern Regional capital.

The Koforidua central market was not spared and the central business area was affected by the storm leaving the Central Police Station and other areas in the central business district submerged in floodwaters.

Some residents have expressed their disappointment over the construction of the Nsukwao drainage constructor, indicating that it has not solved the perennial flooding challenge in the town.

A visit to the Prince Boateng roundabout shows that the place got flooded whilst many cars still submerged, with a number of access routes cut off.

Koforidua is currently known to be one of the flooded cities in Ghana and the routine flooding experience during heavy rains have been a worry to some residents in the Eastern regional capital.

President Nana Addo Dankwa during a sod-cutting ceremony in the year 2017 for the drainage project emphasized, that the completion of the project would minimize flooding in those identified communities, but according to residents, the situation is getting out of hand as the residents continue to experience same old challenge.

A bridge that connects Adweso Low-Cost Housing to the Adweso SSNIT flat was completely washed away by the rains, and this has affected the human movement of the area especially students and motorists that ply that road.

Some stranded students who spoke to media men narrated their ordeal hence demanded the government’s immediate intervention to end the persistent damage caused by the Nsukwao drainage project.

The New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive, Isaac Apau Gyasi bemoaned, the project before completion has reduced flooding in Koforidua drastically, even though some residents disagree with his opinion.

The MCE for the New Juaben South was worried over the loss of properties due to several recorded floodings in the municipality and called for residents to be very cautious during rainstorms.

He however lamented that some engineers have suggested a structural adjustment is the best way to resolve the persistent flooding in the area to ensure residents downstream are relieved.

This drainage project was launched under the Ghana Secondary cities support program and It was to improve Urban Management and Basic Urban Services in 25 participating Municipal Assemblies across the country.
