Zimbabwe party alleges assassination plot against leader

The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party in Zimbabwe said on Sunday that Nelson Chamisa narrowly survived an attempted murder after his convoy was bombed in the town of Chinhoyi, which is located approximately 115 kilometers (71 miles) west of the capital, Harare.

The CCC said in a statement published on Twitter that explosives were used to harm Mr. Chamisa's convoy as it approached the rally's location.

It said that on Saturday, unidentified individuals also petrol bombed the facility.

The party attributed the attacks to Zanu-PF "thugs," the party in power. The government hasn't yet responded promptly.

The attacks happened a few weeks after an alleged Zanu-PF supporter attacked Mr. Chamisa's van.

Political tension is rising in the southern African nation ahead of a potentially divisive general election in 2023.
