Zambian president suspends chief prosecutor

Just two days after the country's top state prosecutor told the BBC that her life was in danger, Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema suspended her with immediate effect.

The previous administration had a falling out with Lillian Siyunyi, who was nominated by them, and there have been complaints about her professional conduct filed with the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC).

The decision was made based on a suggestion made to the president by the JCC, according to a statement made by the presidential spokesman on Wednesday evening, Anthony Bwalya.

According to the president's spokesman, Katongo Waluzimba has been appointed as chief prosecutor in an acting capacity.

Ms. Siyunyi told the BBC that she had "a great deal to say" in response to her suspension "after the oath of secrecy has been waived by the president.

"The waiver is intended to provide me the opportunity to defend myself freely without worrying about backlash from any group or individual, the woman explained.

It would be illegal, according to her, to appear before the JCC before the waiver had been approved.

The state had long before removed Ms. Siyunyi's security before her suspension.
