Zambia ex-first lady grilled in anti-corruption drive

According to local media, Esther Lungu, a former first lady of Zambia, was questioned on Tuesday regarding ownership claims of ultramodern housing units in the city of Lusaka.

The Drug Enforcement Commission confiscated 15 apartments close to the state lodge earlier this month because they may have been used for criminal profits.

After Mrs. Lungu claimed to be the owner of the apartments, the anti-money laundering agency called her in. Her spouse, former president Edgar Lungu, was with her.

In an anti-corruption effort started by President Hakainde Hichilema, Zambian investigative agencies have been keeping an eye on the former first family.

Politics, according to critics, is driving the initiative.

The president, who came into power in August last year, has vowed to recover all allegedly looted resources by the Lungu regime.
