Zambia is receiving a new US ambassador after the last one was forced out due to a diplomatic spat over his comments on LGBT rights in the country.

Following his confirmation by the US Congress, the newly designated ambassador, Michael Gonzalez, is slated to arrive in the country next month.

The US recalled its then-ambassador Daniel Foote in 2019 after he expressed his "horror" at a judge's decision to condemn a lesbian couple to 15 years in jail.

Zambia accused Mr. Foote of attempting to dictate policies, and President Edgar Lungu declared him persona non grata at the time.

On Tuesday, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema bid farewell to outgoing US Charge d'Affaires Martin Dale, pledging to continue to improve the two nations' long-standing ties.
