Werner is Chelsea's new penalty taker - Lampard
Timo Werner converts from the spot

Timo Werner is the new penalty taker for Chelsea, Frank Lampard has revealed.

The German forward was on the score sheet after cleverly converting two from the spot before Tammy Abraham added a third in the Blues Champions League game with Rennes at Stamford Bridge.

The decision of who to take Chelsea’s penalties all begun when Jorginho failed to convert against Krasnodar last week. Timo Werner showed his scoring prowess from the yard when he slotted the second Chelsea penalty kick following in the absence of Jorginho who was subbed earlier.

The manager after the game on Wednesday addressed that following a conversation between the two, Timo Werner was glad to accept the new role.

‘It wasn’t an easy decision because Jorginho has been pretty faultless for us,” Lampard told ChelseaTV after the game.

“He missed two recently, then Timo came in and scored one in our last game. I had a conversation with Jorginho and his answer was perfect for a professional in that he doesn’t care who takes them as long as we score.

‘That’s how he approaches it so Timo took them tonight. He’s our taker at the moment and he took them very emphatically so I’m happy.’

Jorginho had boasted a perfect return of eight goals from eight penalties for Chelsea before Alisson Becker broke the record in their encounter with Chelsea.
