EC not Issuing New Voter ID Cards

The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed allegations of fresh voter registration and printing of new cards.

Contrary to a video circulating on social media about the issuance of new voter identification cards, the EC said it was correcting cards bearing the same numbers.

“The said video is accompanied by a caption which erroneously creates the impression that staff of the Commission are printing Voter ID cards after the expiration of the Registration Exercise.

“We entreat the public to disregard this video as it is false,” the EC noted.

Registration processes have ended with the exhibition of the voter register commencing on Friday, September 18 and scheduled to end on Friday, September 25.

The EC explained that some centres experienced challenged during the registration exercise in August.

This resulted in the production of duplicate ID cards from registration kits bearing the same codes.

“This led to the printing of Voter ID cards with similar numbers for different persons.

“The Commission is therefore replacing the duplicate cards for the affected persons,” the EC emphasized.

The Commissioned pointed out that the cards seen in the purported video belong to persons with duplicate Voter ID numbers.

“They were authorized by the Commission, printed at the Headquarters and subsequently sent to the District Offices for lamination and distribution.

“The public is therefore advised to disregard this video”.

The cards which have the corrections effected are being distributed to the affected persons.
