US to return $1m embezzled by Nigerian ex-governor

The former governor of an oil-producing state embezzled about $1 million (£840,000), which the US will return to Nigeria, according to the US Justice Department.

According to a statement from the department, this is in compliance with an agreement between the two nations to repatriate funds linked to the kleptocracy of former Bayelsa state governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

From 1999 until his impeachment in 2005, Mr. Alamieyeseigha—who is now deceased—served as governor.

Through dishonest and unlawful means, he amassed property worth millions of dollars while serving as governor, including real estate in Rockville, Maryland, according to the statement.

The forfeited property will be put to use to help Bayelsa State's hospitals develop.
