US announces another $2bn in military aid

And now for some overnight news: a top American official has confirmed that the US will provide Ukraine with fresh military aid totaling $2 billion.

On his unexpected visit to Kyiv earlier this week, President Biden was accompanied by Jake Sullivan, the national security advisor for the White House.

According to Sullivan, while they were there, Biden assured Ukrainian President Zelensky that his nation would receive "more artillery, more ammunition, more Himars," in addition to the previously guaranteed US armoured vehicles and tanks.

The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (himars), a missile launcher that can discharge six guided missiles in rapid succession, is mounted on a five-ton truck. According to Zelensky, the strategy for the battle against Russia is being changed.

What kinds of weapons Ukraine should anticipate from the most recent shipment has not been specified by Sullivan. US officials were constantly deciding how "to give Ukraine the tools that it needs to succeed," they said at a CNN event late on Thursday.
