NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) in the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency of the Eastern Region, Honourable Bismark Tetteh Nyarko on Tuesday October 17, 2023 paid a visit to over 2000 people in Akateng enclave who were displaced by flood being caused by the Akosombo dam spillage and assured both of immediate and long-term relief support.

The yesterday's visit of the hardworking MP to the flood victims was second in series after the floods have rocked the Akateng and its adjoining communities.

Some of the communities that have been devastated by the floods include Battorkope, Akrusu, Porpornya-Fantem, Akateng, Akorkorma-sisi, Kumakuma, Puorkpe and others.

The Afram river, a tributary of the Volta River runs along over 10 communities in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region.
This crisis has been triggered by the overflowing of the Akosombo Dam, resulting in the devastating destruction of homes and farmlands along the banks of the River Volta.

The deluge has led to the disruption of essential services, leaving some areas without access to water and electricity. The Ghanaian government, in an official statement on Friday, confirmed that thousands of people in at least nine districts have been displaced as a direct consequence of the flooding, local media reported.

Prior to the inundation, the Volta River Authority had issued advisories urging residents to relocate to higher ground. This recommendation came in response to the rising water levels upstream of the Akosombo Dam, primarily driven by heavy rainfall in the region.
However exactly a week after Honourable Nyarko visited Akateng community to console with the affected victims of the floods, he has rushed there again on Tuesday October 17, 2023.

The legislator had to mobilize a team from the Ghana National Fire Service and National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to further assess and offer their expert advice on alleviating the suffering of the victims who have so far been neglected by central government.
According to Honourable Nyarko, the Act that established NADMO makes provision for 3% of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) to NADMO for management and alleviating the plight of victims in such unfortunate circumstances.

"I am surprised such funds for NADMO are not made available to assist in the provision of relief items to the people."
I will liaise with my colleague Members of PARLIAMENT when the House resumes and raise this important issue for the benefit of the people," the MP said.
Honorable Nyarko advised the residents to be wary of reptiles and not to use the contaminated water.
Most of the victims are staying with relatives and friends while those who are still living in seemingly weak, dilapidated structures have been advised to evacuate to the abandoned Police Station on a higher ground.
The District Fire Commander appealed to the MP to get them a silver boat and equipment for rescue operations.
According to the District Director of NADMO, Mr Odehe Akor, no relief items have yet been received for the flood victims.
