UHAS to address students' concerns

Barely any unforeseen circumstances, the concerns of students, will see an amicable redress.

In a recent development that left a section of students at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) disturbed, the university management has taken steps to address students' grievances.

At a meeting on May 11, 2023, between UHAS management, led by Prof. Harry Tagbor, the Pro Vice Chancellor, the meeting resolved to addressing the concerns of students.

During the meeting, Prof. Tagbor acknowledged the concerns raised by the students and attributed the repetition of some students to various factors.

However, he assured the students that the university’s management was committed to resolving the issues and will arrange individual meetings with the affected students to thoroughly address same.

The university aims to prioritize the well-being and academic progress of its students.

Additionally, Prof. Tagbor refuted claims made by the students, particularly regarding the late release of the resit calendar.

He mentioned that each student was called and informed.

“I understand the schools called them and spoke to them face to face” In light of the situation, UHAS management has reached an agreement to engage with the affected students on a one-on-one basis. This is because the situation at hand is peculiar to the prospective students. 

Background to the story.

These were the concerns some students raised; Some students at UHAS have criticized the school for its handling of supplementary exams and the subsequent decision to repeat certain students.

The controversy began when continuing students were expected to report to school on January 14, 2023, and lectures were officially scheduled to commence on January 16, 2023.

On January 13, 2023, just a day before the start of the new academic year, the university released the list of students who had failed the previous semester.

To their astonishment, these students discovered that the timetable for the supplementary exams was only released on January 17, 2023, a mere four days later. This left them with little time to prepare, as exams were set to begin as early as January 19, 2023.

The university’s student handbook clearly states that supplementary exams should be taken during the long vacation after the second semester of the academic year in which the student took the original exams.

However, due to the short notice, some students were unaware that they had failed a course and needed to take supplementary exams.

Consequently, a number of them missed the exams entirely or were unable to make the necessary arrangements in time.

Even more astonishingly, it was not until February 10, 2023, nearly four weeks into the first semester, that some students received phone calls informing them that they had been required to repeat their courses.

Those who did not receive these calls continued with their semester activities, unaware of their academic status.

It was only on March 15, 2023, that the affected students were officially notified that they had repeated their courses.

In a sudden twist on April 17, 2023, the office of the Pro VC issued a directive suspending the decision to repeat the students and allowing them to continue their academic work.

This decision was met with relief and joy from the students, who had faced immense confusion and frustration throughout this ordeal. However, tensions resurfaced during the exams when Mr. Israel, an individual connected to the university, entered the exam hall and verbally abused the students who had been permitted to continue their studies.

Despite the students explaining the entire incident to Mr. Israel, he brazenly threatened them, insinuating that their exemption from repeating their courses might not hold.

The hope now is that the university will address the concerns raised and ensure a more transparent and supportive academic environment moving forward.
