According to the police's preliminary investigations, a total of seven persons were killed in the attack.

Three of the seven were representatives from the US consulate, and four were police escorts.

Although there were no US citizens murdered in the convoy, two US consulate employees remain missing. The gunmen allegedly took them away, according to the police.

The attack on suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed branch of the separatist organization, the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), according to Anambra State Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng.

Mr. Echeng did not offer any proof to support his assertion that the attack was carried out by separatists.

The attack was carried out on an advance team of a US mission whose workers were touring a US-funded flood relief project in the south-eastern Nigerian state, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who denounced the attack on Wednesday.

Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria, strongly denounced the assault.

He declared that the security of citizens' lives was a top priority for his government and promised that those responsible for the act would face consequences.
