Tunisia president warns against vote 'interference'

The referendum on a contentious new constitution will take place later this month, and Tunisia's president Kais Saied has cautioned against meddling.

Any "attempts to impede the voter registration and polling station change processes must be addressed," the president declared.

The activities of people who want the referendum to fail will not be tolerated, he declared.

The president made the comments at a meeting with Farouk Bouasker, the head of the country's electoral commission, on Monday at the Carthage Palace.

It does so amid heightened opposition to the president's supported referendum on the new constitution on July 25.

The National Salvation Front, a coalition of the opposition, reiterated its appeal to Tunisians to abstain from the referendum on Monday.

He refutes the charge.

Critics accuse President Saied, who sacked the government last July and dissolved parliament before seizing executive power, of trying to return the country to one-man rule.

He denies the claim.
