DR Congo officially joins East Africa Community

The Democratic Republic of the Congo formally joined the East Africa Community (EAC) on Monday after delivering the necessary ratification documents to the organization's Arusha, Tanzania, headquarters.

Peter Mathuki, the secretary-general of the EAC, received the documents from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Christophe Lutundula.

Matsuki called the development important for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the neighborhood.

The resolution was validated by DR Congo's parliament in June after being accepted by the bloc's members in April.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo joins Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania as the second nation speaking French in the group.

The EAC is already engaged in efforts to end violence in eastern DR Congo, with a regional force expected to be deployed there.
