Civilians are being killed by Russian mercenaries in the Central African Republic, according to a human rights group.

Human Rights Watch claims it has proof that Russian mercenaries fighting in the Central African Republic have killed, tortured, and beaten civilians since 2019.

Witnesses notified the New York-based rights organization about a slew of wrongdoings.

At least 12 unarmed men were beaten and then shot dead at a roadblock in the town of Bossangoa by Russian-speaking soldiers alleged to be from the Wagner Group in July of last year.

They dumped the majority of the bodies next to the road in a shallow trench.

It has also documented charges of arbitrary detentions, torture, and summary executions of males arrested at random in June of last year in the central town of Alindao.

Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group have also been accused by UN experts of conducting systematic and significant human rights violations.

The Central African Republic's government has denied hiring mercenaries to battle rebels.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, underlined this week Moscow's official view that Wagner has no ties to the Russian state.
