Tigray fighters withdraw out of Afar totally - TPLF

Getachew Reda, a spokesman for the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), announced on Twitter that Tigrayan forces have entirely withdrawn from the adjacent Ethiopian Afar area.

"For the record, there are no Tigray Forces, literally none, left in Afar," he tweeted to the international community and anyone concerned.

On Monday, Mr. Getachew told Reuters that he hoped it meant that much-needed food help would reach famine-stricken Tigray.

According to the World Food Programme, only 144 trucks of food aid have made it into the region since the Ethiopian government and Tigriayn forces agreed on a truce last month. According to the United Nations, at least 100 vehicles are required every day.

The latest World Food Programme humanitarian convoy, consisting of 74 trucks, landed in Tigray on Monday.

Tigray military had retreated from most of the region, but remained in some areas, according to Ibrahim Hamed Mohammed, the head of the Afar regional government's Peace and Security Bureau.

"They didn't completely depart. In the Magal district, there is a small army stationed in the Araju and Hida districts. They're only 15 kilometers (10 miles) away from our border "He informed the BBC about it.

In November 2020, conflict erupted in Tigray, spreading to the neighboring Amhara and Afar areas, killing thousands of people, driving millions to evacuate their homes, and putting hundreds of thousands on the verge of starvation.
