Senior government officials met the first wave of 498 women and children returning at Addis Ababa's major airport on Wednesday.
It comes after reports of undocumented migrants being treated inhumanely in the Middle East country, including imprisonment in filthy detention centers.
Over the following 11 months, Ethiopian officials plan to repatriate 100,000 Ethiopians.
