The Re-Registration of A SIM Card is completely Free – Telecoms Chamber

Subscribers should not pay for their SIM cards to be re-registered, according to the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications.

The Chamber highlighted in a press statement issued by Chief Executive Director, Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey, that the ongoing government-directed SIM Card re-registration effort is completely free of charge.

The government and cell network companies will cover the costs of the exercise, according to the Chamber.

"On behalf of its members – AirtelTigo, MTN, and Vodafone – the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications wishes to inform its valued customers and the general public that the ongoing SIM registration activity is completely free, and subscribers are not required to pay any price to any agent."

"This is a national exercise that is being supported by the government and cell network operators," the statement stated.

According to the Telecoms Chamber, certain SIM registration brokers who are now registering subscribers for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are charging for the service. As a result, there is a requirement to correct the problem.

Mr. Ashigbey stated that "anyone who asks any consumer to pay any amount as the fee of registration is illegal and fraudulent."

As a result, he warned culprits to stop engaging in such illegal behavior, as well as subscribers not to pay agents to speed up the registration process.

"Subscribers who are requested to pay or charged for registration should report the incident to their local police station or service provider," the Chamber added.

Meanwhile, the MNO's commitment to being completely open and responsible to both the government and its consumers has been reaffirmed by the Chamber of Telecommunications.

It further stated that the MNO will "seek the assistance and understanding of its consumers to ensure the success of this exercise."
