A teenage girl who passed away from severe burn injuries she got while rescuing kids from recent wildfires is being lauded as a hero on Algerian social media.

18-year-old Dounia Bouhelassa led scouts.

She is thought to have saved numerous kids from a park in the eastern city of El Kala.

The tiny scouts and their leader Dounia was strolling through the woods last week when they became enveloped in flames.

In the incident, eight scouts sustained injuries.

Dounia passed away while receiving medical care at a hospital in Constantine, where she was born.

The wildfires that have ravaged Algeria's northeast have caused more than 40 fatalities and 200 injuries.
