Despite a commitment to protect civilians, fighting has continued in densely populated places, particularly in Khartoum, between the army and the opposing Rapid Support Forces.

Shots fired at a church on the outskirts of Khartoum have injured a number of people, and both the Sudanese army and the rebel Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, are blaming one another for the incident.

Plans for the withdrawal of the combatants from populated areas are supposed to be discussed by representatives from both sides at a meeting in Jeddah.

However, considering the RSF's strongholds in the capital's neighborhoods, that seems extremely unlikely to occur.

Darfur's level of unrest is rising. Arab militiamen supporting the RSF have begun targeting homes in El Geneina.

There is a genuine risk that the war in Sudan may destabilize the entire region because no one seems to know how to put an end to it.
