Kenyan leader apologises over cult deaths, vows action

In the Shakahola forest on the coast, where followers of Jesus were reputedly made to starve to death before meeting him, more than 200 bodies have already been discovered. There are still almost 600 persons missing.

"I'm accepting responsibility for what should not have happened because I'm the president; the deaths in Shakahola. I sincerely apologize for that, Mr. Ruto said in a Sunday television interview with Kenyan media outlets.

He accused the nation's police and intelligence agencies of failing to promptly learn about the cult's operations.

He declared that the involved officials would have to explain the mass murders.

The president pledged to use whatever legal means at his disposal to stop such killings of religious people.

Additionally, he committed to going to the Shakahola forest after the probe was finished.
