South Africa power cuts: Eskom runs out of diesel

According to the minister of public enterprises, South Africa's Eskom has no money left to purchase diesel for its essential plants.

It implies that there will be daily rolling blackouts lasting up to six hours.

Minister Pravin Gordhan stated in a statement that his office would work with the national treasury to acquire funding to pay for diesel supplies.

On Sunday night, Mr. Gordhan called for "extraordinary measures to ensure increased reliability" in the electricity supply during a meeting with the Eskom board.

Eskom is restricted by a massive $26 billion (£22 billion) debt and has outdated, inefficient power plants that need ongoing maintenance.
