South Africa birthday party shooting: Eight killed in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape

In Gqeberha city, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, a shooting during a birthday party resulted in eight fatalities and four injuries.

At a house party in Kwazakhle township, two unidentified gunmen "randomly shot at guests" who were dancing and socialising, according to police.

Although no one has been taken into custody, a manhunt is ongoing.

Police reported that the owner of the attacked house was among the dead and injured, though they have not yet released their identities.

According to Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Nomthetheleli Lillian Mene, about Sunday afternoon's incident, "These individuals were slaughtered by criminals. We will not rest until we find out what happened and who was responsible for [this] cruel and cold-blooded attack on these unsuspecting victims."

On Monday, Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, is due to be visited by the police minister and the national police commissioner.

Despite having one of the highest rates of gun crime worldwide, random mass shootings are rare.

More than 20 people were killed in a series of shootings that occurred at different bars last year around the nation. Investigations into those shootings are still ongoing.
