Senegal's alleged funding of Marine Le Pen sparks row

Cheikh Hadjibou Soumare, the former prime minister of Senegal, was detained by police on Thursday after asking President Macky Sall if he had given money to a French lawmaker.

His attorney informed the media that Mr. Soumare had been contacted by the police regarding his message to the president concerning the purported donation.

In the letter, Mr. Soumare questioned the president about a donation he made to a "French political personality" whose party is characterized by "hatred and rejection of others" for 12 million euros ($12.7 million; £10.6 million).

On Tuesday, the Senegalese government flatly denied giving any money to Marine Le Pen, the head of the French National Rally, who paid Mr. Sall a call on January 18.

According to a statement, it "rejected and denounced" the accusations, calling them "cowardly and unfounded".
