River Wardens Will Soon Be Deployed To Protect Ghana's River Bodies-Miraku Duker.

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Mining, Hon. George Mireku Duker has revealed that very soon the government is set to deploy river wardens to protect our river bodies from galamseyers destroying them.

The Minister stated said that, as part of measures to do away with illegal mining in our river bodies, the military will be patrolling our rivers, whilst river wardens will also be deployed to run shifts on a diary basis to scare them from mining in the water bodies.

The Hon. Duker revealed this when he airlifted some media personnel in the Western Region to patrol the tano river to see how galamseyers have destroyed our lands and rivers over their illegal activities.

Some areas along the Tano river where they patrolled are Wassa Dunkwa, Patasi, and Asankrangwa all in the Western Region.

During the tour, the Minister and his entourage arrested 26 persons at one of their sites, some were doing sand winning, galamsey and chain saw operations.

The Deputy Minister after the tour in an interview said if Ghanaians do not put a stop to the activities of galamseyers, Ghana may import water some years to come because all the river bodies have been polluted and Ghana's water naturally needs more chemicals for purification and treatment before the water can be used and this will cost a lot to the country so river wardens will be deployed by the Ministry to protect our water bodies.

He added that, apart from the river wardens, the law of the country will also be applied to the illegal galamseyers activities destroying our water bodies.
