Rape on the rise in South Sudan as fighting eases

According to the UN mission there, Unmiss, sexual violence related to the conflict is increasing in South Sudan as hostilities in the nation subside.

The mission stated in a report that rape and gang rape increased by 218 percent between April and June.

The head of Unmiss, Nicholas Haysom, stated that the exponential rise in sexual and gender-based violence, which primarily affects women and girls, is wholly unacceptable.

Civilian casualties are still dominated by inter-communal fighting, then conflicts between militias supported by opposing government forces.

The report was released at the same time that three experts from the UN Commission on Human Rights arrived in South Sudan.

They will meet government officials, civil society representatives, and diplomats to discuss the findings in the report.
