PSG lead the race of clubs pursuing the signature of Lionel Messi.

The Argentine is a free agent after he parted ways with Barcelona following 'financial and structural obstacles.'

Barcelona in a press statement confirmed on Thursday, August 6, 2021, that Messi will not be part of the team after negotiations broke down due to Spanish La Liga financial regulations.

"Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).

"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.

"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life."

The Argentine’s agent and father, Jorge has told Sky Sports they were open to renegotiating Messi’s salary and other terms in the contract yet the reply from Joan Laporta was that even without Messi’s new (50-per-cent-less) salary in their wage structure, they are still spending 95 per cent of the club's income on player wages.

Due to that certain players had to be sold to balance the books and Messi fell prey to it.

Messi is now a free agent and few clubs are reported to be interested in signing him for the looming season. Paris Saint Germain lead the race as Manchester City seemed to have backed off after their £100m purchase of Jack Grealish.
