The President of the Ghana Journalists Associaiton (GJA), Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has said the association will continue to put pressure on the Ghana Police Service to ensure that it concludes investigations into the gruesome murder of slain journalist Ahmed Suale.
 
Mr. Dwumfour gave assurance when he addressing the gathering to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day held in Accra on Wednesday May 3, 2023.
The day which was marked worldwide was under the theme: “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.”
 
The GJA President and the Executive, Minister of Information, National Media Commission, Ministers of State, Honourable Members of Parliament, UNESCO Country Representative, UN Co-ordinator, Chief Executives of Media Houses and other organizations, GIBA, PRINPAG, ASWIM, Representatives of Civil Society Organisations and Traditional rulers have graced the occasion.
"Madam Chairperson, on this day, we cannot forget Ahmed Suale, four years after his gruesome murder. We continue to seek justice for him by putting pressure on the state security regulatory authorities concerned to up their game," he stressed.
Quite recently, GJA President said the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice disclosed that the docket on Ahmed Suale had not reached his office considering the fact his office has prosecutorial powers.
"As an association, we will continue putting  pressure on the Police to conclude the investigation on the matter and submit the docket to the AG for the necessary action 
Let's come together as journalists and fight hard for a more liberated society," he added.
He mentioned that the celebration of World Press Freedom Day next year will coincide with the GJA's 75th anniversary as an organization. 
He assured that the GJA will intend to organize significant activities to commemorate both occasions.
As the political season approaches, the GJA President exhorted media colleagues not to entertain politicians or individuals who will poison the atmosphere with intemperate and provocative remarks.
He stressed that "Let's perform our professional roles while keeping the country's peace in mind.  
Micing no words Mr. Dwumfour warned politicians who have a propensity for abusing journalists or stifling free expression that they will not go scot-free.
He added that "We are prepared to safeguard all media professionals as they perform their duties with diligence.
"Finally, we commit ourselves to promoting professional standards in the media and urge all journalists and media houses to uphold the highest level of integrity and professionalism," he said.
Mr. Dwumfour stressed that the Association will not hesitate to call out any journalist or media organization that indulges in flagrant violations of professional ethics and standards.
