Pirates abandon ship in Gulf of Guinea, take crew

The hijackers of the Danish ship, which was taken over by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea last Saturday, have reportedly abandoned the ship, bringing some of the 16 crew members with them, according to the ship's owners.

The Monjasa Reformer, which flies the Liberian flag, has also had other passengers saved.

The crew sought shelter in the tanker's secure room when the five pirates boarded, the owners claimed on Tuesday.

The ship was discovered by the French fleet off Sao Tome and Principe and captured west of Porte Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo.
