Perpetrators of Military Brutalities in Wa Must Be Brought to Book - NDC
Wa Township

The Upper West Regional Communication Secretariat of the  National Democratic Congress, (NDC) is calling on authorities to bring to book perpetrators of the Military brutalities in Wa township on Thursday, July 1, 2021.

According to the party, the duty of the military to secure the safety of the people in the region has turned the other way around.

The NDC Regional Communication Secretariat issued a press statement in condemnation of military brutalities meted to a section of road users on the Tindanbaa – Zongo stretch in Wa of the Wa Municipality.

The statement made reference to issues which the party thinks is unprofessional acts of the military detachment in the Upper West region.

“The two most recent dastardly acts of brutalities and unprofessional military conduct that has raised uneasiness in the region has been, the shameless molestation of an innocent young teacher by name Abdulai Ahmed in Wachau on Friday, 25th June 2021 and the bizarre military invasion of some suburbs of the Wa Municipality in the Afternoon of today Thursday, 1st July 2021, to met out various degrees of atrocities on innocent citizens who are yet to unravel what their transgression is in this whole Rambo like display of military might” it added.

The matter was earlier reported to the police who came to the scene to stop the military in the process.

The Police Command, however, sent a report on the matter to its Criminal Investigation Department, (CID) headquarters in Accra for a probe. Meanwhile, the Regional Minister for the region in an interview to the media indicated that he has placed a call to the minister of Defense on the happenings and promised to send down five top management staff of the military high Command to Wa, to apologise to the chiefs and people for the unfortunate incident.

STOP MILITARY BRUTALITIES- BRING PERPETRATORS TO BOOK

The NDC in the Upper West Region has noted with great worry, the recent incessant misconduct by detached units of the Ghana Armed Forces, who have been deployed to various border points of the country to secure our territorial integrity in the wake of increasing terrorist threats.

The NDC is worried that, rather than securing citizens and boosting the confidence of natives of the Region that, the armed forces can secure our safety and security, some of these armed uniformed personnel have rather become the perpetrators of atrocious brutalities and have become a source of insecurity to a relatively calm and peaceful Region.

The two most recent dastardly acts of brutalities and unprofessional military conduct that has raised uneasiness in the region has been, the shameless molestation of an innocent young teacher by the name Abdulai Ahmed in Wachau on Friday, 25th June 2021 and the bizarre military invasion of some suburbs of the Wa Municipality in the Afternoon of today Thursday, 1st July 2021, to met out various degrees of atrocities on innocent citizens who are yet to unravel what their transgression is in this whole Rambo like display of military might.

It is our considered view that whatever reasons that underpinned such invasions, are insipid,  ludicrous and very much condemnable to no uncertain terms.

These incidents of gross misconduct linked with the rather worrying reports of unwarranted military killings in Ejura,  Techiman and other parts of the country leaves an indelible scar of shame on a country that has before now been widely acclaimed as a citadel of democracy and good governance in Africa.

Against this backdrop, we stand in solidarity with the victims of these atrocities and people of the  Upper West Region to call on President Akufo Addo ( The Commander - Chief of the Armed Forces), The Defence Minister, Chief of Defence Staff and indeed the High Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, to immediately offer an unqualified apology to the People of the Upper West Region. We demand, that, all the injured be given enhanced medical care at the cost of the Armed Forces and all the perpetrators of these acts be punished accordingly as a primary requirement to restore any sense of confidence in the detachment.

We reckon the recently escalated misconduct of security personnel as fruits of an impotent, wobbling and sleeping government that appears to have lost ideas in managing all sectors of the nation's endeavour ranging from security to economic, social and welfare issues among others.

It is equally our ardent demand that stringent measures be put in place to prevent the recurrence of such shameful acts.

We wish to add that, the NDC shall closely monitor how this story proceeds to a logical end. Thank you.
