On his honeymoon in Colombia, a paraguayan anti-mafia prosecutor was killed.

During his honeymoon in Colombia, a high-profile Paraguayan prosecutor who prosecuted organized crime in his native country was shot and killed.

Marcelo Pecci was slain by two gunmen on a beach on the picturesque tourist island of Baru.

Mr. Pecci's wife had announced her pregnancy on Instagram just hours before the incident.

President Mario Abdo Benitez of Paraguay called the shooting a "cowardly murder."

Before Mr. Pecci was shot, his wife, journalist Claudia Aguilera, said they were approached by two guys on a private beach. She stated that he had received no threats.

"Two men attacked Marcelo. They came in a small boat, or on a jet ski, the truth is I did not see well," Ms. Aguilera told the El Tiempo newspaper.

"Without saying anything, one of the perpetrators shot Marcelo twice, one in the face and the other in the back," she claimed.

"Assassins arrived on the beach... and attacked and murdered one of our guests," the Decameron Hotel, where the couple was staying, said in a statement.

According to news agency AFP, Paraguayan prosecutor Augusto Salas, a colleague of Mr.Recci said the attack was "typical of the [drug] mafia, therefore that is what I will think until the contrary is proven."

The head of the Colombian police and Paraguayan investigators have arrived at the crime scene.

Colombia's national police commander, General Jorge Luis Vargas, claimed that US officials will also assist in the inquiry.

Mr. Pecci's areas of expertise included organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and terror financing.

In the year 2020, he worked on a case involving Ronaldinho, a former Brazilian footballer who was caught while attempting to enter Paraguay with a phony Paraguayan passport.

President Mario Abdo of Paraguay remarked on Twitter, "The despicable death of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci in Colombia hurts the entire Paraguayan people."

"We strongly condemn this horrible event and pledge to redouble our efforts in the battle against organized crime."
