Nigeria fines stations for airing BBC banditry report

Four broadcasters, including Multichoice Nigeria Ltd, were each fined 5 million nairas ($12,000; £9,800) by Nigeria's broadcast authority for airing a BBC documentary about the activities of bandit groups in the country's north-western region.

The documentary, according to the National Broadcasting Commission, "glorified the operations of bandits and weakens national security" and violated the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

The BBC had stated that "it stands by its journalism" and that "the story is overwhelmingly in the public interest."

The other media outlets penalized are Trust Television Network, NTA-Startimes Limited, and TelCom Satellite Limited (TSTV) (Trust TV).

The deadline for payment of the fee for all outlets is August 30.
