Mozambican capital restricts beach access amid crime

In order to reduce crime, all beaches in the city of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, will be closed from 19:00 to 05:00 local time.

The action has been brought about by an increase in violent crimes, such as rapes and murders, especially those that occur at night and frequently on beaches.

The municipal director of tourism, Leonel Matsumane, stated that authorization would be required before anyone could host events on the seashore in the evening.

The Costa do Sol beach, a well-liked location for gatherings and sporting events, would have a special police station to monitor adherence to the directive, he added.
